Stuart Keate fonds. 1943-1987.

The fonds consists of records of Keate's career as a publisher of the Victoria Daily Times (1951-1964) and the Vancouver Sun (1964-1978) as well as of his private life. There is some correspondence and manuscripts relating to his career as a Lieutenant in the Naval Service, 1943-1945, and Bureau Chief of Time Inc. in Montreal, 1948-1950. Much of the material consists of correspondence, subject files, speeches, scrapbooks, audio tapes and cassettes, photographs, and ideas and manuscripts of his book Paper Boy. Some prominent correspondents include G.M. (Max) Bell, R.S. Malone, Bruce Hutchinson, and Allan Fotheringham. Photographs depict family, friends, business associates, politicians and sports figures.

Stuart Keate was born in Vancouver, graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1935 and went into journalism, serving as a sports writer for the Vancouver Province. From 1942-1945 he was an information officer in the north Atlantic and Pacific theatres. After the war, Keate served as Bureau Chief of Time Inc. in Montreal and publisher of the Victoria Daily Times (1951-1964) and the Vancouver Sun (1964-1978).
